One Month In: UK Progress Update

Here’s a quick rundown of the first month of the Training Institute: U.K.: Katie Yarbro, Elizabeth Ogburn, and Merritt Denman are the first interns for the program, and they are all serving with One Church in Brighton, England. They hit the ground running and headed to Youth Camp, an off-site but nearby gathering of multiple congregations that gave the interns an early jump on meeting some One Church members. The ...

Training Institute:UK (Week One Review)

Interns arrived on schedule and made their way through customs. Not necessarily the smoothest process--thanks again guinea pigs : ) --but they made it through. Andy (One Church) was there to welcome them out of the gate and transported them to Brighton. After a rest day, they went to a Youth Camp near Brighton that they described as resembling a Passion gathering (circa 2000). From Elizabeth's picture and their collective description ...

2014 Sermon Graphic Recap

Each year, our Lead Pastor, Brady Herbert, does a Sermon Recap where he revisits and reflects on his favorite/least favorite sermons/sermon series from that past year. I love reading his thoughts on each series he liked or maybe didn’t like -- it also brings out a little nostalgia in me from the past year. A lot can happen over the course of a year. In 2014 there were 52 different sermons ...

2014 Sermon Recap

For the last few years, I’ve used the blog to analyze my sermons from the last year and share my own thoughts on what we have covered as a church. A normal part of many people’s church experience is to get to the car or lunch (or Life Group) and ask, “What did you think about the sermon?” The more I’ve been around other pastors in recent years, the more ...

The Perfectionist In Me

I recently read a feature story in Graphic Design USA called, “100 People to Watch” in the creative industry. Each profile would list out each "person to watch" and their favorite font, favorite color, favorite gadget, etc. and the last two questions were “What is your biggest strength?” and “What is your biggest weakness?” As I read the profiles of these graphic designers, creative directors and artists I began to ...

Our Weakness and God’s Power

“We envision You, striding through the streets of our city, fearless and zealous, as powerful as You are good.”“Conquering Shepherd, send us to every part of our city. Keep us weak as sheep so that Your power is on display.”How often do you think about God’s power? How often do you think about your weakness? How often do you think about the work of the Evil One? If you are like ...

Creative Christians

There has been a surge of articles (this one in particular has gotten a lot of attention) written lately based upon drastic statistics of people (mainly people 18-29 years old, aka The Millenial generation) leaving the church in droves. Notice I didn’t say the capital “C” Church, but leaving the LOCAL church. In the article mentioned above, Rachel Held Evans says, “Time and again, the assumption among Christian leaders, and evangelical ...

Grab a Corner

Last night, students and leaders connected to our Youth Ministry celebrated a Youth Night of Worship event to kick off our semester. The evening was full of eggs, chickens, dinosaurs, gorillas, guns, flashing lights on phones, misspelled words, music, and a message.  The beautiful thing about it is that it was all part of worshipping God. The theme for the evening was “Grab a Corner.”In Luke 5:17-20, there is a ...

He Has Called Us Higher

I recently saw this image posted on my Facebook news feed. I seem to recall seeing lots of similar posts—things to the effect of: “Just hoping to make it through this Monday,” or, “Can’t wait until Friday.”Are we really that unhappy with what we are doing? Is life really that hard?Is our unsatisfactory life due to a bad work environment or tough class schedule, or is it a deeper problem? ...
