We are delighted that people of all ages are resonating with the God-given vision of the “Our Turn” campaign. As a church (in a college town) devoted to the discipleship of the next generation, it is important to us that we hear our college students actively involved with the project, regardless of how much longer they may be located in the Waco area. Kara Miller, a Baylor student and a college Life Group leader, provides her responses to indicate the growth she has experienced and desires to experience as a follower of Christ.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT HARRIS CREEK? WHAT HAS BEEN A DEFINING MOMENT IN YOUR SPIRITUAL FORMATION DURING YOUR TIME HERE?
I love that Harris Creek is more than just a church; it’s a home. Harris Creek is rich with authentic community and weekly sermons that challenge its congregation to pursue truth and seek the welfare of the city outside of its campuses. I still remember the first time I attended worship with Harris Creek as a shy freshman from out of state, not even completely sure I had made the right decision to come to Baylor. The message from that service has carried with me to this very day and was the defining moment in which I knew the Lord had placed me exactly where I needed to be for the next four years. In the sermon, Brady talked about how we are called to step outside of our comfort zones, into what may seem like the unknown, in order to step into a life of faith and purpose. When we step into a life of complete faith and unwavering trust, the Lord works in bigger ways than we could ever imagine. He referenced Hebrews 11, in which the two words, by faith, are repeated over twenty times. This chapter in Hebrews is filled with descriptions of the incredible things that the Lord was able to do through His sons and daughters who were bold enough to step out by faith. This message was the catalyst for what I would consider to be the ongoing spiritual formation I have experienced during my time at Harris Creek. It is a message that has continued to shape and challenge me to flee from the trap of complacency and comfort, knowing that the Lord can do immeasurably more than I could ever imagine when I choose to simply trust in His plan.
WHY DO YOU FEEL THAT THIS PROJECT IS IMPORTANT?
I think that for college students, especially for those of us who are juniors and seniors, it can be hard to fully realize the importance of this project because many of us won’t actually be here to see and experience the tangible benefits. But just as Brady has said time and time again, it’s our turn. No matter our age or financial positions, it’s our turn to step out in faith for the future generations of people who will become a part of the Harris Creek community. It’s our turn to step out in faith just as Noah, Abraham, Moses, Sarah, and countless other faithful followers and disciples did so that the Lord’s name might be known among Waco and even the nations. I believe that the importance of this project is immeasurable, as it will impact college students and the greater Waco community, full of people who are hungry for Truth and accountable community, for years and years to come. As an older sister, nothing would make my heart happier than to watch my little sister find a home at Harris Creek just like I did. As I reflect on the incredible impact that Harris Creek has had on my life over the past two years, I find myself asking, “How could I NOT give my financial support to a place that has given so freely to me in return?”
WHAT ARE YOU REARRANGING/SACRIFICING TO MAKE IT HAPPEN?
I am choosing to rearrange my monthly budget as a whole, making sure that I am only spending money on the things that I absolutely need and eliminating any trivial purchases. It’s amazing just how much a few weeks’ worth of Common Grounds’ coffees can add up to! I hope to use my budget purposefully so that I can fully give sacrificially, just as I know so many before me did for the future generations of Harris Creek and ultimately for the growth of the Lord’s Kingdom in Waco and beyond.
