Give Yourself Away

Whisper this out loud to yourself & ponder it for a few moments….
GIVE YOURSELF AWAY.

What comes to mind when you hear this? What emotions are connected with this phrase for you?

Maybe your heart leaps a little. Or maybe it reminds you of how tired you are. Maybe both. That’s ok—there’s grace & freedom. We are all in different seasons & life may be especially difficult for you right now, but as you continue reading, remember this Truth from 2 Corinthians 3:5, “Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God…”

I love the song, RISE by the Robbie Seay Band. If you are not familiar with this song, you can click HERE to listen. Here are a few of the lyrics that stand out to me…

“If you choose to love, to know that the call is to
GIVE ALL YOU ARE, to give love away, away…

(chorus)
Rise, rise—people of love rise. People of love rise.
GIVE YOURSELF AWAY.
All rise, rise—people of love rise. People of love rise.
Give yourself away. Give yourself away….

And to hear the call is to give your LOVE away—
to hear the call is to give your LOVE away.
And to hear the call is to give your LIFE away,
is to give your LIFE away.”

So what does “giving ourselves away” look like? The examples are endless & all around us…putting others first, loving others, serving them, listening to them, encouraging them, supporting them, doing random acts of kindness, etc. On Father’s Day, my Facebook newsfeed was flooded with beautiful stories of daddies everywhere “giving themselves away” daily for their family. On days when my heart & mind are focused outward, I see people all around me who selflessly & sacrificially serve & love people around them…friends, family, co-workers, strangers. IT’S BEAUTIFUL. It challenges & encourages me to do the same. I’m so grateful to be a part of a community of Christ followers who strive to “Seek the welfare of the city” (Jeremiah 29:7).

At the Sunwest campus this past Sunday, we sang FOLLOW YOU” by Leeland.  This song also talks about giving ourselves away…

“All my needs You have supplied. When I was dead,
You gave me life. How could I not give it away so freely?

(chorus)
I’ll follow You into the homes of the broken,
I’ll follow You into the world.
I’ll meet the needs for the poor and the needy, God,
I’ll follow You into the world.

And I give all myself, I give all myself, and I give all myself to You.”

These 2 songs about “giving ourselves away” line up perfectly with so many scriptures. One of my favorite passages in the Bible is 2 Corinthians 5:14-21. Focusing in on verses 14 & 15, it says, “CHRIST’S LOVE COMPELS US, because we are convinced that one died for all & therefore all died. And He died for all that THOSE WHO LIVE SHOULD NO LONGER LIVE FOR THEMSELVES but for Him who died for them & was raised again” (emphasis mine).

And then we read in Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ and I NO LONGER LIVE, BUT CHRIST LIVES IN ME.”

What powerful reminders of what our daily life as Christ followers looks like!  John 13:35 says “By this, all men will know that your are my disciples, if you have LOVE for one another.”

We are called to love—and to GIVE of ourselves. Knowing that it is the Lord Christ whom we are serving (Colossians 3:24). And it’s His love that compels us. It is HIS LOVE poured out from us to othersHE IS OUR SOURCE. We draw from His ENDLESS WELL of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, & self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). So this idea of “giving ourselves away” simply means being a willing vessel—allowing God to love others through us.

So today (& every day), as you go about your day, be reminded that Christ gave completely of Himself in order to rescue us & reconcile us to the Father. May we be a church that seeks the welfare of our city with this same selfless & sacrificial mindset, to the glory of our good & amazing God.
