Lent Day 15 Reflection
They will see the glory of the LORD, the majesty of our God…Say to those with anxious heart, ‘Take courage, fear not. Behold, your God will come.’…Then the eyes of the blind will be opened and the ears of the deaf will be unstopped. Then the lame will leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute will shout for joy.” -Isaiah 35:2, 4-6
God does not change. He has been, is, and will always be the same. Part of God’s unchanging character is to be a Healer; He loves to heal and restore broken things. Isn’t that exactly what He did by sending His Son to Earth? He offered a way through Jesus for us to be healed from sin and made new. Not only does He bring us out of the broken places in our lives and renew our hearts when we surrender our lives over to Him, but He is also in the business of physically healing our bodies.
Before my husband, Cameron, and I moved to Waco last year, we lived in Bryan and were part of a house church. We experienced a lot of new things with this group of people. We witnessed worship in a sweeter way, prayer in a deeper way, and physical healing for the first time in our lives.
To be totally honest, laying hands on people and asking God to physically heal them seemed so uncertain, foreign, and even a little kooky to us at first! But it became a normal part of our time together, and it really shifted the way Cameron and I saw and understood God’s power and love for His people. As a church, we experienced people being healed immediately of things like: uneven hips/legs, terrible back pain, chest pain, month-long pneumonia and broken ribs, and a bad earache…all because we asked in humility, and believed with certainty that He would do it.
And what was so sweet about this is that it was so easy! God wasn’t far away, and He isn’t far away now. God wants to show us His power through the healing of our bodies, and all we have to do is ask–it’s that simple!
Now I know this concept probably seems strange to a lot of you, as it was to me. We’re all part of a culture that reduces faith down to reason and logic alone, but Scripture is clear that God works in mysterious ways and is not limited by our human concepts of Him-whether true or not. But I encourage you to explore this area of your faith as you continue to grow with God. Nowhere in Scripture does it say that healing will happen every time we ask for it, but Romans 5:5 assures us that the hope we have does not disappoint us. Ask God to give you the deep-rooted faith to ask for healing in your life and in the lives around you, as well as the faith to truly believe in the Healer.
I know all of us can think of someone in our life who is in some sort of physical pain, is experiencing illness and disease, and is in need of healing. I urge you to spend time alone, with your Life Group, with your spouse, your kids, and your friends, and PRAY for them! I urge you to HAVE FAITH that God can and will heal them! And when you do experience God’s healing in someone’s life or even your own, be bold and SHARE IT!! (Even if it doesn’t happen the first time, keep praying! Your faith will not put you to shame, even if God does not heal. I believe that God is using whatever physical trial you are going through to grow your faith, no matter the outcome.)
In Hebrews 11, the author highlights people throughout Scripture that were brought out of their trials and were healed, and others who were tortured, imprisoned, and killed. But the final point he makes is that although they did not receive the fullness of life yet, they were ALL commended for their faith! The fullness of our healing will come with eternity, but God still wants to heal us here and now. I don’t want us to miss out on the deepest measures of God’s love due to our lack of faith in His character.
God…reach to those who are broken in body and heal them. Your touch will open their eyes and they will see the glory of God. They will sense Your boundless love for them. And may we be empowered by your Holy Spirit to believe You are who You say You are, grow deeper in our faith, and outwardly rejoice when we experience Your power through healing.
