Top 10 List

I know many of you are going to be severely disappointed—the Worship and Arts Pastor is going to post something that’s not “Worship and Arts Pastory”. Shocker right?

Well, turns out I was inspired by our recent parenting conference at Harris Creek. I learned some great stuff on raising our son to love Jesus.

For those of you that don’t know our son, Shep, here’s a picture of us a couple of weeks ago hanging out in our living room. He’s the man.Image

So, here’s the inspiration: I decided to make a Top 10 list of things that I want Shep to grow up knowing and doing. More than a few of these are values that my parents helped to instill in me, and things I certainly want Shep to adhere to. Paige and I really want him to grow up to be a gentleman. We want him to treat everyone with kindness. More than anything, we want him to be a man of God.

We are going to hang this list in his room. I figure I have a while since he’s just 6 months old and he can’t read yet. But, it’s going in there, hopefully until he leaves our house in 18 years. I hope and pray that we raise him up in the wisdom of our Father.

Shep’s Top 10 Guide to Being a Stud

10. Shake hands firmly. Look people in the eye. Say “thank you.” Say “I’m Sorry.” Encourage others. Laugh a lot. Sleep well.

9. Tell the truth—all the time. If you lie some of the time, no one will believe you any of the time.

8. You will make mistakes. Figure out what you did wrong and move on.

7. If you don’t work hard at something, it’s not worth doing.  (Colossians 3:17)

6. You don’t know everything, and you never will. Look for ways to learn new things every day.

5. What you say matters. When in doubt, don’t say anything at all. (Proverbs 10:19)

4. Yes ma’am, No ma’am, Yes sir, No sir….always, no matter how old or young someone may be. You owe everyone an equal amount of respect.

3. Open the door for everyone. No exceptions.

2. Every person matters to God. They should matter to you too. (Luke 10:27)

1. Put your relationship with God first. No girl, thing, job, amount of money, etc., is more important than loving your Creator. (Luke 10:27)

What else would you put on your list? Any advice that your parents gave you? Other advice that you give to your kids? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

  1. Hi Drew, This is great! I know it’s not even a point in your head at all right now, but if this is a list for him to grow up with it probably should include….God is already preparing a beautiful young lady to be your wife and His plan for marriage is for her to be your one and only true love & partner for life. So remember “True Love Waits”!
Here is another list I found once, printed & framed it for Logan, I even sent it to College with him:
TWENTY THINGS A MOM SHOULD TELL HER SON
    1. Play a sport.
It will teach you how to win honorably, lose gracefully, respect authority,
work with others, manage your time and stay out of trouble.
And maybe even throw or catch.

    2. You will set the tone for the sexual relationship
so don’t take something away from her that
    You can’t give back.

    3. Use careful aim when you pee. Somebody’s got to clean it up
    That you know.

    4. Save money when you’re young because
You’re going to need it someday.

    5. Allow me to introduce you to the dishwasher, oven,
washing machine, iron, vacuum, mop and broom.
    Now please go use them.

    6. Pray and be a Spiritual Leader.

    7. Don’t ever be a bully and don’t ever start a fight,
but if some idiot clocks you,
    Please defend yourself.

    8. Your knowledge and education is something that nobody
    Can take away from you.

    9. Treat women kindly.
Forever is a long time to live alone and it’s even longer to live with somebody
    Who hates your guts.

    10. Take pride in your Appearance.

    11. Be strong and tender at the same time.

    12. A woman can do everything that you can do.
This includes her having a successful career and you changing diapers at 3 A.M.
Mutual respect is the key to a good relationship.

    13. “Yes ma’am” and “yes sir” go a long way.

    14. The reason that they’re called “private parts” is because they’re “private”.
Please do not scratch them in public.

    15. Peer pressure is a scary thing.
Be a good leader and others will follow.

    16. Bringing her flowers for no reason is always A good idea.

    17. It is better to be Kind than to be Right.

    18. A Sense of Humor goes a long way in the Healing process.

    19. Please choose your spouse wisely.
My daughter-in-law will be the gatekeeper for me spending time with
    You and my grandchildren.

    20. Remember to call your mother because I might be missing you.

  2. Really enjoyed this post Drew.

Your advice on silence reminded me of a great quote from Dionysius the Elder
“Let thy speech be better than silence, or be silent.”

A few others to add: (1) Read, read, read. (2) Never stop serving (and if you can serve without receiving any recognition, even better!)
