Sticks and Stones

“Sticks and stones may breaks my bones, but words will never hurt me!”

That’s probably the biggest lie we were ever taught growing up.  I know our parents all meant to comfort us when we came home from grade school wounded by the incessant teasing of kids on the playground.  But really…words hurt.

The truth is, we all are walking around wounded.  Wounded by words.  Words thrown carelessly at us as if they are weightless and will disappear as quickly as they came into being.

The truth is, we all are walking around wounding.  Wounding with words.  Words that are not carefully chosen to lift up, encourage, empower.  Words whose weight does not cease to exist once the sound leaves our vocal chords.

Proverbs 12:18 says, “The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”

Words are important and necessary.  Words are how we communicate, process, instruct.  Words have value and weight.

“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.”  Psalm 19:14
